Jnanpith Award: Key Facts

  • The Jnanpith Award is regarded as the highest literary honour in India, presented to writers who have made exceptional contributions to literature in various Indian languages.
  • The award was instituted in 1961 by the cultural organization Bharatiya Jnanpith.
Award Components

Recipients of the Jnanpith Award receive:

  • Cash prize: ₹11 lakh
  • Bronze statuette of Vagdevi (Saraswati)
  • Citation acknowledging the writer’s literary achievements.
Proposals and Nominations:
  • Nominations are submitted by litterateurs, teachers, critics, readers, universities, literary organizations, and language associations.
  • These proposals form the initial pool for evaluation.
Language Advisory Committees

For every language considered for the award, a Language Advisory Committee is constituted.

  • Each committee consists of three eminent literary critics and scholars.
  • The committees are reconstituted every three years.
  • They examine all proposals and shortlist suitable candidates.

Importantly, the committee is not restricted to the submitted proposals. It can also consider other deserving writers to ensure that no eminent author is overlooked.

Evaluation Criteria

While recommending a candidate, the committee:

  • Evaluates the entire body of literary work of the author.
  • Assesses the author’s contribution in the context of contemporary literature.
  • Considers the broader impact of the author on Indian literary traditions.
Language Rotation Rule
  • Once a language receives the award, it becomes ineligible for the next two years.
  • This ensures fair representation of different languages in the selection process.
Eligibility
  • The award is open only to Indian citizens.
  • A writer can receive the award only once in their lifetime.
Evolution of the Selection Criteria
  • For the first seventeen awards, the prize was given for the most outstanding literary work by an author.
  • From the 18th Jnanpith Award onwards, the rules were revised and the award began to recognize the author’s overall contribution to Indian literature rather than a single work.
Inclusion of English:
  • From the 49th Jnanpith Award, English was added to the list of eligible languages along with other Indian languages.
First Recipient

The first Jnanpith Award was presented in 1965 to Malayalam poet G. Sankara Kurup for his celebrated poetry collection Odakkuzhal.
